A mobile app for gate and security staff: scan a visitor's Emirates ID, check them in, and check them out against the right employee and vendor.
ArcelorMittal is one of the world's largest steel and mining companies. At its site in the UAE, every vendor and visitor who comes through the gate has to be identified, recorded on the way in and recorded again on the way out. CodesClue designed and built the mobile app that the gate and security team use to do it, with an Emirates ID scan in place of typing.
At a steel plant, the gate is where safety starts. The team there needs to know who is on site, who they came for and when they left, and a paper register or a spreadsheet cannot answer that quickly or reliably.
The app turns each visit into a record. Staff sign in with their company account, scan the visitor's Emirates ID card, and check the visitor in. When the visitor leaves, the check-out screen shows when they arrived, and staff close the visit against the right employee and vendor. Five tabs cover the day: Home, Check In, Scan, Check Out and Settings.
Designed for a gatehouse, not a desk: quick, clear and hard to get wrong.
The Emirates ID card is the starting point of every check-in, so details are captured from the card rather than keyed in by hand.
Each screen does one job with one large button, so staff can work fast with a queue at the gate.
Check-out shows the check-in date and time before anything is changed, so staff confirm the right visit.
The interface carries the ArcelorMittal mark and a purple-to-orange palette taken from it, with simple illustrations that explain each step.
A site with strict entry rules, busy shifts and a team that works on its feet.
CodesClue designed the app and built it in Flutter, with a Node.js backend behind it.
Challenge
Each visitor has to be identified and logged in and out, with nothing left to memory or paper.
Solution
A dedicated scan screen, one tap from anywhere in the app, captures the visitor's Emirates ID card and submits it.
Challenge
Vehicles and people queue at shift changes, so each check-in has to take moments, not minutes.
Solution
Separate check-in and check-out flows, with the check-in date and time shown when a visit is closed.
Challenge
A visit belongs to a vendor and to an employee, and the record has to link them correctly.
Solution
Each visit is linked to an employee and a vendor, picked from lists rather than typed.
Challenge
The app holds personal details from ID cards, so only signed-in staff can use it.
Solution
Staff sign in with their company email and password, and a Node.js API stores and serves every visit record.
How a visit is recorded at the gate.
A member of the gate team signs in with their company account.
They scan the visitor's Emirates ID card and submit it.
The visitor is checked in against the right employee and vendor.
On the way out, the visit is checked out, with the check-in time on screen.
